Plymouth, MI divorce attorney Carlo Martina has appeared in hearings before the Michigan Supreme Court on behalf of the State Bar of Michigan, Family Law Section, on issues involving child support, evidence, and ethics. Besides being a member of the State Bar of Michigan Family Law Section, and Chair of the Section’s Family Law Council, for the last 9+ years, he has been chair and co-chair of the Council’s Family Support Committee. In that capacity, he served on the Michigan Supreme Court’s State Court Administrative Office’s (SCAO) workgroup responsible for conducting an extensive review and revision of the 2008 Michigan Child Support Formula Manual. Carlo was appointed by the SCAO to the Child Support Leadership Council. Carlo also served on the committee which drafted proposed legislation to create a Child Support Formula Review Commission.
As a member of the Oakland County Bar Association, Carlo has served on its Family Court Committee and chaired its training the family courts and alimony committees. He is a member of the Livingston County Bar Association. Carlo is also a member of the Wayne County Family Law Bar Association (WCFLBA), where he served as strategic planning chair and subsequently, as WCFLBA’s President. He has chaired the WCFLBA’s legislative committee and served as its liaison to the Family Law Section Council. He was also co-chair of the Traversing the Family Courts and Alimony committees. He is a longstanding member of Michigan Association For Justice.
He is former Chairman of the State Bar of Michigan, Family Law Section Council, co-chair of the Council’s Family Support Committee as well as its Court Rules Committee. He has given lectures on issues pertaining to family law at seminars held by the Judicial Institute of Michigan, as well as the State Bar of Michigan and Institute of Continuing Legal Education on issues including custody and parenting time, comparison of remedies for dissipation of marital assets, changes in the rules of evidence, as well as rules of professional conduct, discovery techniques, personal protection orders, changes in Michigan Child Support Formula Manual, change of domicile and ethical considerations in retainer contracts, among many others.
Carlo has been a speaker at numerous State Bar of Michigan Family Law Section, Judicial Institute, and Institute of Continuing Legal Education (ICLE) seminars, as well as for community groups. He authored Chapter 1 of ICLE’s treatise, ‘Michigan Family Law’, as well as numerous articles in the State Bar of Michigan Family Law Journal on issues regarding Support, Discovery, Domestic Violence, Evidence, Ex Parte Orders and parental alienation.
Carlo was a member of the Advisory Board of Legal Alternatives for Women, a community service project sponsored by the National Council of Jewish Women, providing the general public free legal and psychological information to victims of domestic violence, a board member of the Coalition on Domestic Violence, sponsored by the Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services (ACCESS), as well as a legal advisor to Dare to Care, a project to raise funds for the Michigan Committee for the Prevention of Child Abuse. He was a legal consultant and featured speaker on the community service video “Latchkey Kids: Home Alone and Safe.” Carlo was also copublisher of the monthly publication “Metro Parent Magazine”. Having been divorced and remarried years ago, he is the proud parent of 2 adult sons and the step father of two adult daughters. Prior to becoming an attorney, over 35 years ago, Carlo served as an air intelligence operations specialist with the 191st Fighter Intelligence Group.
